I am seriously anxious about writing but hopefully I will learn along the way. My first blog post is about the mundane task of getting to the airport and then our final destination. It’s only mundane because in my experience I wish I could click my heels together as Dorothy does in the Wizard of Oz, but instead of ending up at home, I would obviously in this case be in ‘The Land of Smiles’
Here we go. Post number 1!!
6am: I could not stop the stream of tears running down my already tired face as the car pulled out of the drive and down the road, a sudden pang of worry struck me as mum stood in the doorway of our family home. A joke from James made me titter for a moment before turning my head to look out of the window to hide my emotion.
The journey to Heathrow was quick and painless unlike previous experiences. We played a quick game of up and down in the lifts in Terminal 2 as two people battled out what can only be described as a power struggle where the outcome would certainly be repetitive strain on their forefingers. Needless to say we visited every floor twice, watching dads eyes roll around in his head as he shook it. Any longer on this particular ride and we would probably have missed our flight. We proceeded to check in shortly after.
As creatures of habit our next stop after check-in was to have our famous goodbye Breakfast with Dad, reminiscing over previous years where we had come to South East Asia and the trials and tribulations of such an experience. Many times people have said to me, “Oh you better be careful there, it’s really dangerous”, to which I would almost shrivel up inside with fear, but quickly snap myself out of it and ask “Have you been to South East Asia then?”, the answer would normally be “Oh no but I’ve seen on the news…”, At which point without being rude I would normally buckle and agree with their ideas knowing full well that if I stopped doing anything and everything after reading/ listening to the news, well I would never do anything. I’m sure several other people feel the same way. I will say here that a couple of years ago after reading “The Secret” By Rhonda Byrne I decided I would detoxify my poor overactive mind and withdraw from any News watching, reading or listening. I felt so much better that I carried on and now I only partake in watching News that I am interested in. Anyways I digress… so I shall move on.
Now, for our next Goodbye… We cheekily handed Dad some money for being a super awesome human (he always takes us to the airport). A tear jerk in dads eyes meant I needed to produce a ‘PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER ATTITUDE’ in fear that if I did start to cry again I would be in full blown emotional melt down. I curbed the feeling and gave him a gigantic hug instead and a kiss on the cheek. James said a more macho goodbye than me with a quick hug and a manly handshake. The look in Dads eyes said “I know you’re married now but, you had better look after my little girl, or your toast Mate!”
One or two steps later we found ourselves in the airport waiting lounge sipping yet another cup of coffee and of course making new friends. Oh wait… I said WEEE, didn’t I? I of course mean James! Once again I hear the simultaneous employment of his vibrating vocal chords together with the locomotion of his lips and cheeks AKA ‘James’s voice’ “Yes those Swans have Aged a bit” I hear James retort, as he and his new friend Brian giggle to themselves. I’m pretty sure the joke had evolved from a conversation about the town of Swanage near our home in England and went on for the next 20 minutes whilst we waited for our row to board.
We boarded the flight and quickly found our seats. As James realized we weren’t seated by his now new-ish friend Brian he started to chatter at (not with) other passengers with a list of antidotes for his future behavior, things like
“If I put my seat back and you don’t like it just give me a heads up”
and
“If I accidentally lay on you while I’m asleep, well just give me a little rub and guide me over there towards my wife whilst saying there ya go little guy”. Laughter and titters came from all directions.
Soon we were all settled down and the Aircraft was zipping down the runway like an arrow. Up into the sky. We were off! I spent half my time watching films and the half watching other passengers. One in particular was so confused by the prospect of opening a small bag of pretzels… I watched her examine it like a Rubik’s Cube turning it round and round attempting to open different sides of it with the hope that soon she might solve the puzzle and eventually enjoy the contents. I felt sure someone might end her torment and open it for her, however she cracked it after ten minutes and I felt glad I had experienced here triumph *A hint of sarcasm you say? Oh no not me!! It’s the lowest form of wit!
Anyway our Flight was easy-peasy and by all accounts went quite quickly. We made our way through passport control in Bangkok airport, which housed the usual robotic type system. You show your friendliness to the security personnel (the poor man or woman sat in the booth all day checking passports) maybe entertain giving him/her a nice smile, but to no avail. I’ll get them next time with my gleaming white-toothed smile, you’ll see!!
I have babbled on enough for this first chapter of our honey-moon. I’m hoping to post once a week and next time i’ll have lots of pics too 🙂 so see ya’ll later.

Perfectly balanced Abbi – you’re a natural. Try to remember to live in the now. I’ve never done anything as brave or adventurous but I know that if I did I would spend my whole time going over what has happened and how I was going to cope with what is to come. If life has taught me anything it is “don’t do that”. Live in the now. Smell the smells, drink in the atmosphere become aware of your surroundings and let all your senses feel what is happening at this very moment. It is such an adventure I want your memory batteries to be full up of the life you are living not bypassed as you prepare for the next small step. Love and best wishes to you both on this adventure and all your future ones. LIFE – go get it! X
